The girl her family knew
Her family called her Kayla Bug. They remember her smile, her humor, and the hugs she gave so freely.
Kayla attended Moberly High School and enjoyed basketball and track. She liked playing Roblox with her brother Joe, spending time with her sister Christina, and being involved in her church’s youth group. She loved animals and enjoyed working with children.
Her parents, Michael and Renee, her siblings, friends, and extended family are left holding those everyday memories. October 22, 2026 would have been her 17th birthday.
After her death, parents in the school district began organizing a memorial scholarship in her name. Her classmates and community wanted her memory to carry forward.

What investigators allege

Kayla’s family reported her missing on May 6. Investigators later alleged that her car had been deliberately disabled before her disappearance.
The supplied statements describe allegations that motor oil was poured into the fuel tank. They also describe surveillance of Kayla walking with Woods-Bloss after the car broke down, witness accounts of her being transported in a vehicle’s trunk, and allegations that she was assaulted and shot at the conservation area.
Investigators further allege that a baton was discarded and that evidence was concealed. The statements attribute different actions to different people. Those distinctions matter when following the charges.
A separate part of the investigation concerns Alayna Mason’s alleged escape in a patrol vehicle while detained, and Powell’s alleged assistance afterward. That related case is included in the document collection.
